Samantha is a professional arts lecturer (PGCE) with over 25 years dance teaching and mentoring experience. She is an ex Royal Academy ballet teacher, a talented choreographer and visual designer. Samantha directed award winning national UK first dance business Beaus & Belles before setting up SozoArts Holidays in Portugal in 2013 with her husband Kit. As well as making a range of top-class ballet films (see the Gallery page), Samantha has a degree in arts from the Open University. Samantha is your friendly host on the courses and assists the tutors with her experienced artistic eye.
Kit worked as an engineer, whilst developing his skills in drawing and painting. He describes himself as a Da Vinci artist having both a logical and an artistic side. Kit has developed his art practice over a couple of decades in the media of illustrative drawing and acrylic painting. Taking visual cues from landscape and buildings he likes to explore simplified and semi abstract forms - see our Gallery page. Kit is able to help students develop the formal aspects of drawing such as composition, perspective and tone, and is a patient and encouraging tutor. He is an excellent painting tutor for beginners and intermediates.
Judi Goodwin is a freelance journalist and trainer and has been a regular contributor to The Daily Telegraph, BBC Woman’s Hour and The Radio Times. She was consultant commissioning editor for Ideal Home magazine and is an NLP Practitioner and qualified Life Coach. She believes everyone has the ability to write well and that people learn best when they’re having fun.
Valentine is a talented artist from Cornwall in the UK. She studied art at Bournemouth & Poole college of Art and Rochester Art College. In addition to drawing and painting, Valentine has developed her practice engaging with graphics and interior design, and is a member of the Institute of Designers. Her current work combines painting with print-making and collage. She has exhibited in the Dorset Art week, Drawn to the Valley Open Studios, and Tavistock Art Society. Valentine will be able to directly encourage and offer her expertise particularly in the areas of design, colour harmonies, texture and mixed media.
Nigel is the recipient of many national awards with Fuji, Kodak, The Master Photographers Association and the British Institute of Professional Photographers. He has also lectured extensively throughout the UK and overseas. Nigel fell in love with Portugal in 2006 after spending a holiday near the Obidos lagoon and has been coming over to Portugal regularly ever since, staying in his apartment in Foz do Arelho, so he is very familiar with locations along the Silver Coast. Gonçalo is an experienced photographer with wide-ranging experience in commercial, corporate and editorial photography. Gonçalo likes to combine teaching the basics of handling a camera, with the concept of how to build an image using composition, light, colour and the elusive concept of “gesture” (a term much used by legendary american photographer Jay Maisel). He likes to keep language as simple as possible and use analogies in order to explain the more technical aspects of photography, and scale it up as needed for more advanced attendees. Catarina is a freelance photographer and video maker, with a degree in Communication Sciences, specializing in cinema and television (Nova University, Lisbon). She has been working as a professional photographer since 2013 when she worked for a national marketing agency in Lisbon, and has been published in lifestyle magazine ‘New in Town.’ Catarina has worked in all genres of photography. Working with magazines, on brands, universities, restaurants, real estate agencies, organizations and with individuals. Catarina has taught many photography workshops, so has plenty to offer all students - from complete beginners to more experienced students looking for professional level of experience. Catarina speaks Portuguese and English.
Simon has taught writing and screenwriting at Worcester University for five years. His work outside of academia covers a diverse range of fields from animation and regional theatre, to radio and award winning films. He is an established writer for the BBC and also works as a script doctor and analyst for a number of independent film companies both here and in America.
