Portugal sure keeps its secrets well. In this land, the best places are kept quiet. Very quiet. The determined traveller who is prepared to search out hidden gems, will be richly rewarded. The more so, for finding sites of great interest without having to jostle for a place. So it is with Caldas da Rainha.
Caldas da Rainha is located at the western edge of the Centro region of Portugal. Its pace of life is very calm compared to the bustle of Lisbon, yet it is only 1 hour´s coach ride north from the capital. At first encounter this town seems to be pleasant and unassuming. There is a lack of signposts indicating any attractions here. Thus you could be forgiven for being unaware that Caldas is perhaps the leading centre for production of ceramic goods and ceramic arts in Portugal. A population of 30,000 resides within the urban area of the town (described in portugal as a city). Yet Caldas is home to no less than 7 arts museums, in fact 10 if you consider that the Arts Centre houses a number of separate museums.
So after some years living in the region, we can be forgiven for still working our way through these art museums. Today it was the turn of the Centro de Artes, discovered next door to our dentist. Here are a few snaps from our brief visit. Look out for more updates about Caldas da Rainha, and perhaps experience it yourself on one of our creative holidays!
